⁣The series, adapted from the book TEMPERED BLADE by Monte Barrett, allowed for backdrops of French-American New Orleans as well as backwoods settings as it followed Bowie, a wealthy young planter and adventurer, along a path that was crossed by many real-life people including his good friend and naturalist John James Audubon (Robert Cornthwaite), famous pirate Jean Lafitte, President Andrew Jackson, Deaf Smith, Johnny Appleseed, Jefferson Davis, Sam Houston and the man with whom Bowie would share his fate at the Alamo, Davy Crockett.

⁣JIm Bowie is in a hurry on his way to New Orleans to take a lady to the Opera Ball when he comes upon two women who are having trouble with their pony cart. They are Angelique Moreau and Miss Peabody of Miss Peabody's Select Female Academy. They are searching for a young girl who has run off from the school to elope. Her father is planning on making a handsome contribution to the school so they are desperate to find her before she can carry out her plans of marriage. He tries to get back on the way to N.O. but is drawn back to the ladies when he discovers they have been kidnapped as part of an extortion scheme.

⁣Jim is tricked into aiding a plot to assassinate President Jackson.

⁣When Annie tries to save an old prospector from an attack by outlaws, they think she has learned the secret location of his cache of gold.

⁣Annie and Tagg try to help a young ex-convict who's been implicated in a gold shipment robbery.

⁣Lofty has jailed Hugo but he won't reveal the location of the stolen loot. Annie thinks if they let Hugo escape they can trail him but they don't count on him kidnapping Tagg. Tagg, as a hostage, makes Hugo's life miserable.

⁣A young man returns to Diablo to practice medicine after his father put him through medical school.

⁣While everyone is distracted by a wedding, outlaws rob the bank.

⁣Annie, Tagg and Lofty try to help a history buff who believes he has found a map that could lead to gold hidden by the Spanish explorer Coronado over in the early 1500s. The man's search for the treasure is hindered by a gang of outlaws who want the loot for themselves.

⁣ A Dutch gunsmith shows Annie the revolutionary new rifle he has developed for the army of his adopted country, but word of it spreads and outlaws become interested.

⁣When the citizens make a run on the town's failing bank, the banker tries to cover up his counterfeiting by faking his death.

⁣A telegrapher's desperate message for help forces two murderous thieves to hide their loot in a box of bicycle parts meant for a pair of intrepid cross-country cyclists. The crooks force the cyclists to pedal their ill-gotten loot out of town, but Annie discovers their scheme and lays plans to capture the killers.

⁣When a range war over water rights appears imminent, a masked man wearing a Robin Hood costume supporting the homesteaders knocks down ranchers' fences and stampedes stock. When an impostor dons a similar costume and robs the Diablo bank both sides demand that Lofty bring the criminal to justice.

⁣ Annie and Lofty investigate when two outlaws hold-up the messenger carrying the Cattlemen's Association receipts to the bank. They loose the trail near the shack of a strange old junk collector who claims to have no knowledge of the robbery or the criminals. Annie doesn't buy the man's story and sneaks into the man's home to search for clues to where the money has been stashed.
