For example, I went on a 4-mile run the other day and my Oura Ring said I only burned around 200 calories, while my Apple Watch was much closer to the mark around 350 calories. I’ll wear both my Apple Watch and Oura Ring to compare calories burned, and Oura always lists around half the calories burned as my Apple Watch. The highest score I’ve received is 92, and when I hit 95, I’m signing up for a marathon. Experts, including our Fitness and Commerce Editor Charles Thorp, NASM, put countless smart rings through the gauntlet and evaluated models on accuracy, design, durability, and price. For the past eight years, our fitness and gear editors have been testing all the top fitness trackers as they release.
I’ve been wearing the Oura Ring since it was first released, and I’ve seen impressive advancements by the brand every time a new product is introduced. Compared to the Garmin Instinct 3, which offers GPS, heart rate zones, and dozens of activity modes, Oura is far less effective. I’ll also notice Oura calling out a form of stress affecting my body right before I get sick. I typically sleep horribly the first night of any trip, and Oura has always caught that and given me a "take it easy today" warning the next day.
You can also see data on your heart health, and this goes hand-in-hand with the stress tab to see how much restorative time you get versus stress, as well as your current heart rate, sleeping range and activity range, which give you a picture of your cardiovascular health. The Oura Ring’s accurate tracking extends to general health stats like daily steps, resting heart rate and body temperature. This takes into account how well you slept, the previous day's activity and other biometric data (such as heart rate, body temperature, and heart rate variability) to formulate a score out of 100, which gives you an indication of how ready your body is that day. It measures your vitals using a range of sensors to track biometrics such as heart rate, blood oxygen and body temperature, amongst others. It pairs with the Oura app, which can give you a snapshot of your general health whilst allowing you to take a closer look at more detailed metrics if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of your health data.
It includes the Advisor, which is an AI-style chat where you can ask it just about anything about your health metrics, or ask for advice on how to create a good bedtime routine, ways to manage stress and more. So I favour apps like Stardust (which can be connected to the Oura Ring) to log and track other symptoms for my menstrual cycle health. Whilst you can log how heavy your period is, there is no way to tag other symptoms (as of yet) that you might have during your cycle that other period-tracking apps have. The app gives you suggestions on ways to relax and unwind, and you can access in-app meditations and see in real time how these activities help to bring your body back to a more relaxed state of mind. It's interesting to see how they can fluctuate during different days and what activities bring on stress or restoration. Amusingly, when I was drying my hair with a hot brush one evening, the Oura Ring detected it as a workout.I also like that the Oura app encourages me to stretch my legs if I've been sitting at my desk for too long (guilty), so it helps me stay active in even small ways, which all add up over time.
I tracked my daily stats, sleep and exercise and compared the fit and feel of the Oura Ring 4 to other smart rings on the market. It’s not for athletes like marathoners or long-distance cyclists — it cannot compete with the live stats and exercise accuracy of smartwatches from Apple and Garmin. It automatically detected and logged outdoor runs, but GPS data was sometimes inaccurate. I hadn’t used the Oura Ring app in about five months when I synced the Oura Ring 4 for the first time. Rest mode paused my daily fitness and health goals (including notifications).
There really is a wealth of information at your fingertips, and it gets better and more accurate the longer you wear your ring. You can get down into the really nitty-gritty with the data if you want to, but it's not forced upon you. Plus, if you happen to lose your ring, you can trace it on the Oura app.
I don’t even wear my wedding ring, so at first I was constantly tucking the Oura safely away, grumbling hypocritically about white-collar workers who sit and type all day. I’ve worn a watch for too long now; I made it through three days before I put my Apple Watch back on. The Oura is a ring, so unlike any of the other fitness trackers I’ve tested, you’ll need to check your stats on a smartphone. There are two infrared LED sensors, two negative thermal coefficient body temperature sensors, a 3D accelerometer, and a gyroscope—that's a lot of sensitive sensors for such a tiny package. Oura sends a sizing kit and asks you to wear a fake ring on your finger of choice for 24 hours, because your fingers swell when you work out or sleep.
